The 30 hour classroom and 6 hour behind-the-wheel driving course is required for all new drivers. This is the groundwork for the beginning driver and provides the basis for becoming a safe driver. Students are encouraged to either obtain their Learner’s Permit before beginning the class, or shortly after the classes begin. It is best for the new driver to begin driving as soon as possible after obtaining their Learner’s Permit with a qualified supervising parent, guardian or mentor to get a feel for the driving task, and what it entails.

A Point System Conference is required when an individual receives a certain number of points on their Driving Record. The Motor Vehicle Administration in Maryland sends a letter to these individuals which explains that this requirement must be met in order to continue driving. There is a date by which they need to fulfill this requirement, and it is indicated on the letter which they receive from the MVA. This letter needs to be brought to the class when the class is offered. Persons who fail to take the Point System Conference by the required date usually must then attend a Driver Improvement Program.

A Driver Improvement Program is usually for individuals with more points than someone who needs  the Point System Conference, or is ordered By the court system to do so. If the class is not taken in the required time stated on their letter, their license may be suspended.

A 3-Hour Alcohol and Drug Class is offered to persons who already have a Driver’s License from another country, and wish to receive a Maryland Driver’s License. Participants will learn the adverse effects of alcohol and other drugs on the driving task. A multiple-choice test is given at the completion of the class, after which each individual is issued a certificate indicating completion of the class. This certificate must be presented to the Motor Vehicle Administration when the individual schedules their Driving Test. Upon successful completion of the driving test, a Maryland Driver’s License will be issued. Although the class is only offered in English, the test may be taken in a variety of languages, including Spanish, Russian, Polish, Korean, etc.
